Is Your Leaky Gut the Problem?
The Gut-Brain Connection is getting more and more attention here in Viridian and North Arlington as the source of all sorts of issues, from mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, to autoimmune disorders, to digestive problems.
How can a leaky gut cause so many varied issues? If undigested proteins can get through the gap junctions in your intestine, inflammation will occur, which can cause widespread issues.
So how do you know if your issue stems from this vital part of your body? The gut can be damaged by exposure to antibiotics, prolonged stress, toxins, or medications especially Tylenol (acetaminophen). If you have one or more of the following issues, chances are your gut may need some work:
Bloat, reflux, gas, or cramps
IBS or IBD (Irritable Bowel)
Food sensitivities or Allergies
Hormonal Issues such as PCOS or PMS
Skin Issues - psoriasis, eczema, acne, or inflammation
Thyroid Disorders
If you have leaky gut, we would love to talk to you more about how we can help. Elimination of foods and improving the signal of the vagus nerve, which connects your brain to your gut will likely be necessary to fully heal. But to begin with, we recommend the following foods which may aid in repair:
Bone Broth
Fermented Vegetables (juicing vegetables is also super helpful!)
Raw Cultured Dairy (or Fermented kefir water if you are dairy sensitive right now)
Sprouted seeds such as flax, chia, and hemp
Organic beef, lamb, and wild-caught salmon
For me, the key to lasting change is to start small, and stay consistent with the habits I build. By layering these changes on top of each other slowly over the years, I’ve been able to achieve extraordinary health. In my early 20’s I took up to 6 medications and had chronic pain, digestive issues, allergies, anxiety, and terribly painful periods. Now well into my 40’s, I’ve been off my meds for decades, and have more energy, get better sleep, enjoy great digestion, have no pain, and so much more! Here are the Top 6 things I’ve done for myself to create and maintain my health.
Celery juicing. The juicing has helped me soooo much with: digestion/bloat, energy, clearer skin, sensory issues, less pain in my bunion, etc.
Bone broth – Bone broth helped me with digestion so much, I’ve hardly gone a day without it in years. As a bonus, it helps by providing building blocks for healthy skin, nails, hair. A beauty supplement! You can either make it at home in your Instapot, or here is my favorite product.
Paleo diet – Again, with underlying gut issues, the paleo diet has helped provide my gut with some awesome nutrients. Has also helped with stabilizing blood sugar, keeps my weight stable, decreases my cravings for sugar, and more. Fasting and/or fasting mimicking also improves the gut.
Meditation: My daily meditation practice keeps my emotions in check, improves sleep, and puts my stress into perspective so I can be present with my family and patients.
Yoga/exercise – Movement is what keeps me happy as well as healthy. It keeps my energy up, and gives me the strength, flexibility, and endurance to serve others at a high level. I love most exercise – running, weights, elliptical, climbing, dancing, and hot yoga! Yoga has been amazing for creating flexibility, stability by strengthening spinal muscles, plus the burn and the sweat are amazing! I love classes all around town.
Chiropractic Care – There hasn’t been a bigger change for me and my health than when I started chiropractic care. My first adjustment1 instantaneously erased the chronic pain I’d had for 15 years. In addition, I was able to get off all 6 of my medications within three months. Though chiropractic is not a cure for any specific condition, it helped my allergies, painful periods, muscle spasms, pain, sleep problems, and inflammation.
